Week 1
2/14/14
Due Today:
- WebAssign 2.3 is due tonight at 11:59
- Worksheet 2 is due today in class
Before Class:
If you have time, take a look at this video proving the power rule for positive integer exponents. We'll talk more about this in class.
In Class:
More on the derivative: estimating it, using it, interpreting it, and computing exact derivative functions using limits.
Homework:
- There will be no written homework due Monday.
2/13/14
Due Today:
- WebAssign 2.2 and 2.1/2.2 `correct/incorrect' are due tonight at 11:59PM
Before Class:
If you haven't done so already, read over section 2.3. Print out worksheet 2 to work on in class!
In Class:
We will talk about the derivative as a function, not just as an individual slope.
We will also discuss some more interpretations of the derivative and some alternate notation.
Homework:
- WebAssign section 2.3 is due Friday at 11:59.
- Write up your solutions to worksheet 2 - due Friday in class
2/12/14
Due Today:
- WebAssign 2.1 is due tonight at 11:59PM
- Worksheet 1 is due in class.
Before Class:
Read sections 2.2 and 2.3. 2.2 will be an easy read, since it essentially takes 2.1 and replaces "velocity" with "rate of change".
In Class:
We'll extend our idea of velocity to include rates of change for any function, discuss tangent lines, and compute more limits of difference quotients.
We will cover all of 2.2 and most of 2.3.
Homework:
- Start WebAssign 2.2 and 2.3. 2.2 is due Thursday, 2.3 is due Friday.
- Do the "Correct/Incorrect" for 2.1/2.2, due Thursday.
2/11/14
Before Class:
Read section 2.1, pages 76-80.
In Class:
We will discuss 'rates of change', roughly following section 2.1.
Homework:
- WebAssign 2.1 (due Wednesday 2/12)
- Worksheet 1 (due Wednesday 2/12)
2/10/14
In Class:
We'll briefly discuss the course policy, then ease back into math by
having a conversation about some of the "big picture" ideas in calculus and working a few problems from worksheet 1 on limits and slopes.
Homework:
- Print out and read the course policy and homework policy, found on the course info page.
- Create your WebAssign account for 122B using the class key arizona 5706 5659.
Note: this is different than your 122A class key!
- Start writing your solutions to Worksheet 1 according to my homework writing guidelines in the homework policy. These are due Wednesday 2/12.
