Required Materials:
You are required to bring the following to every class.
  • Text: Calculus: Single Variable, 4th Edition, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al.
  • Graphing Calculator: TI-81, TI-83, TI-85, TI-86, etc. No calculator swapping is permitted during exams, and calculators may not be allowed for some exams.
Grades:
  • There are 800 total possible points.
  • The preliminary exam is worth 50 points.
  • Homework is worth 50 points.
  • Quizzes are worth 100 points.
  • There will be four in-class exams, each worth 100 points.
  • The final exam is worth 200 points.
  • Grades will be awarded as follows:
    • 90-100% = A
    • 80-89% = B
    • 70-79% = C
    • 60-69% = D
    • 0-59% = E
  • An I (Incomplete) will be awarded only if all the following conditions are met:
    • The student has completed all but a small portion of the required work
    • The student has scored at least 60% on the work completed
    • The student has a valid reason for not completing the course on time.
    • The student asks for an incomplete before grades are due (48 hours after the final).
    • The student agrees to make up the material in a short period of time.
Exams:
  • In order to make up a missed exam, you must produce written evidence within 48 hours of the exam which shows that you had a legitimate reason to miss the exam. A legitimate reason is something fairly catastrophic, such as a serious illness. Neither a head cold nor a plane ticket counts as a legitimate reason for missing an exam.
Homework:
  • There will be a homework assignment for each section from the book which is covered in class. There may be additional handouts.
  • Homework will be collected and checked for completeness, but it will not be graded. Your understanding of the homework will be evaluated through the quizzes and tests.
  • Homework for a given section is due at 11:05 AM on the date listed in the table below.
  • You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with me, with tutors, and especially with each other. However, copying solutions is a complete waste of your time.
Quizzes:
  • There will be daily quizzes on the material covered in the book and in lecture. The quizzes are primarily intended to test whether or not you have done the homework.
  • There are no makeups for missed quizzes.
  • Quiz grades will be curved slightly at the end of the semester.
