The Mathematics of CAT Scans

Back Projection

Absorption ratios can be used to calculate a "projection function."

the projection function

A Back Projection is created by "smearing" each function along the direction in which it was made.

multiple projections sum to recreate the object By rotating around an axis, hundreds of back projections can be used to recreate a three-dimensional image of the original object. This image can then be "sliced" at any angle to provide internal views of the object.

The projection function is filtered before each back projection to reduce scatter and allow for a clearer image.
