To help students develop a broad base of calculus knowledge, including basic skills as well as applications.
To promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills through the application of calculus concepts to common situations.
To promote and utilize the Rule of Four: All concepts should be presented algebraically, numerically, graphically and in context with applied problems.
To incorporate the expression of mathematical ideas in writing into the curriculum.
To enhance learning and understanding of calculus concepts through the integrated use of graphing calculators.
To help strengthen students' general academic skills. Hop back.
Students are responsible to inform themselves of university policies regarding the Code of Academic Integrity. In general, students found to be in violation of the code are awarded a grade of E in the course. This refers to all areas of the course, including tests and quizzes. Hop back.
You are expected to be in class on time every day. Attendance in a course such as this is essential. There will be in-class quizzes and assignments for which there will be no make-ups. Students who miss the first two days of class may be administratively dropped unless they have made previous arrangements with me. In addition, students with 3 or more unexcused absences during the semester MAY be administratively dropped from the course. Hop back.
If you anticipate issues related to the format or requirements of this course, please meet with your instructor to discuss ways to ensure your full participation in the course. If you determine that formal, disability-related accommodations are necessary, it is very important that you be registered with Disability Resources (621-3268; http://drc.arizona.edu) and notify your instructor of your eligibility for reasonable accommodations. You and your instructor can then plan how best to coordinate your accommodations. Hop back.
A programmable graphing calculator is required for this course. Recommended is any model in the TI-83 or TI-84 series. Models that can perform symbolic calculations (also known as CAS) are NOT allowed on exams and quizzes. CAS models include (but are not limited to) the TI-89, TI NSpire CAS, HP 50g and Casio Classpad 330. Students are not allowed to share calculators during exams and quizzes. Hop back.
Times for my office hours are listed on my homepage. I am available to help you during my office hours or during scheduled appointments. Since it is most difficult to explain mathematics via email or phone, I will refrain from attempting to do so -- therefore, please see me personally or make use of the tutoring opportunities listed below.
Please give me at least a month notice for any letters that you need for me to write or any forms to complete.
Hop back.
When you send me an email, please include an appropriate heading in the Subject Line and include your full name in the Body. If you leave the Subject Line blank, then I may never get your email. Also, I do not memorize user names.
Any email sent after 5:00 PM will likely not be answered until the next day. I will put forth every effort to answer your email within 24 hours.
I will not accept homework by email nor will I explain homework by email. If you must be absent from class, you can email your homework to another student in class, who will then print your homework and hand the hard copy in to me when it is due. Hop back.

The tutors with ThinkTank are well trained and supervised; each is quite knowledgeable in Calculus. You are strongly urged to take advantage of this opportunity.
Additional Practice Worksheets not in CLASSNOTES can be found here. . . . Solution links will become active after you have had a chance to solve the problems. Additional Information on Tutoring can be found here.
Private tutoring is available for an hourly fee; you can find a list of tutors in a rack just outside the Math Office room 108. Hop back.
Homework will be assigned and posted on my web page on a regular basis. These assignments will be in one of two formats: (1) "WA" (Web Assign) which is computer generated using WebAssign
(2) Problems from the text, from handouts or from the Final Exam Study Guide are to be hand written with all work shown on your own paper. Once all material for a section has been explained, then the assignments for that section will be due at the beginning of the next class period, unless otherwise stated. You are expected to complete each assignment. A quiz on selected concepts covered in an assignment may be given during a class period after the material has been explained. If there is not time in class for an intended quiz, then this quiz will be assigned at "homework" and is due at the beginning of the next class day. In addition, there will be a number of in-class assignments that will be counted as homework grades. Please see Homework Rules
If you are absent for a quiz or for classwork or to hand in homework, then it will count as a zero. Unless otherwise stated, the lowest homework/quiz/classwork grade will be dropped at the end of the course in order to take care of absences (illness, athletics, religious days, family issues, etc.). Homework will not be accepted via email. You may, however, email your homework to another student in class who will print your homework and hand it in to me on time. Or you may hand in an assignment early by placing it in the basket at the main math office, room 108 of the Math Building. Be sure to place the date and time on the Sign-in Sheet.
Homework, quizzes, and in-class assignments will be worth a total of 50 points.
Any issues with such grades must be addressed within a day of their being returned to the class. For more details, please see the Homework Policy whose link is in the next section.
If I am ever absent from class, you are still responsible for the assignment as posted on my web page. Read the appropriate section(s), study the examples, and do the assignment. Hop back.
The Final Exam, which counts 200 points, is on Saturday, Sep 9 from 10:00 am -- 12:00 noon. Additional information and a study guide can be found at http://math.arizona.edu/~calc.
All electronic devices, particularly cell phones, must be turned off during all tests and exams. Silence and vibration modes are not allowed.
Hop back.
An on-line form to request an alternate time due to an acceptable time conflict (such as a University excused event) will be available in D2L after the second week of class. An email will be sent to notify you when the form becomes available. Again: Information about this will be on D2L. Hop back.
Grades are posted on WebAssign. Homework done on WebAssign is worth a total of 40 points for the course. Written work, worth a total of 10 points, will be assigned which you will hand in usually at the beginning of class. Any issues on the grading of this written work must be addressed to me within one day of the assignment being returned to you.
The absolute deadline for your being able to question any grade in Math 122A is Tue Jan 31, 2017 at 1:30 pm. The total number of points available for the semester is 250. These points are obtained in the following manner:
WebAssign "Homework"
40 points
WebAssign "Section Specific" (includes Written HmWk/Qz/ClWk)

A: 90% of total points
B: 80% of total points
C: 70% of total points
D: 60% of total points
A grade of C or higher is needed to continue registration in Math 122B, First Semester Calculus. If you do not receive a grade of C or better you will be administratively switched out of Math 122B and into a Math 120R class. Grades will be posted in UAccess. It is your responsibility to check your grades and your class schedule. Hop back.
