Required Materials:
  • Text: Calculus: Single Variable, 4th Edition, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al.
  • Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for his class. Some possibilities: TI-81, TI-83, TI-85, TI-86. No calculator swapping is permitted during exams, and calculators may not be allowed for some exams.

Grades
  • There are 600 total possible points.
  • Homework and quizzes are worth 100 points.
  • There will be three in-class exams, each worth 100 points.
  • The final exam is worth 200 points.
  • Grades will be awarded as follows:
    • 90-100% = A
    • 80-89% = B
    • 70-79% = C
    • 60-69% = D
    • 0-59% = E
  • An I (Incomplete) will be awarded only if all the following conditions are met:
    • The student has completed all but a small portion of the required work
    • The student has scored at least 60% on the work completed
    • The student has a valid reason for not completing the course on time.
    • The student asks for an incomplete before grades are due (48 hours after the final).
    • The student agrees to make up the material in a short period of time.

Exams:
  • In order to make up a missed exam, you must produce written evidence within 48 hours of the exam which shows that you had a legitimate reason to miss the exam. A legitimate reason is something fairly catastrophic, such as a serious illness. Neither a head cold nor a plane ticket counts as a legitimate reason for missing an exam.

Homework
  • There will be a homework assignment for each section from the book which is covered in class.
  • Each problem should be neatly written, with all intermediate steps included and the problem number clearly marked. Written explanations should be included whenever appropriate.
  • If your homework is too messy or unclear, I will not grade it (and you will not get credit for it).
  • You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with me, with tutors, and especially with each other. However, you are required to write up your own solutions.
  • For each homework assignment, I will grade a subset of the assigned exercises. Each graded exercise will be given a score of
2 if the solution is perfect
1 if you were on the right track for at least half of the exercise,
          0 otherwise
  • Homework is due in class by 6:05 PM. No homework will be accepted after this time.
  • No late homework will be accepted under any circumstances. However, homework grades will be curved somewhat at the end of the semester. If an emergency arises and you cannot attend class on the day an assigment is due, you may turn homework in to the math department main office (room 108) before class on the due date provided you can produce written proof within 48 hours of that class period which justifies your absence. See the section on missed exams, above, for what constitutes a legitimate reason to miss a class.
  • If you have an excused absence which you know about in advance-e.g., if you have a Dean's excuse-your homework must be turned in at the beginning of the class period preceding your absence.
  • Please staple your homework. I am not responsible for keeping track of multi-page assignments that are not stapled together.
  • Please do not use paper from spiral-bound notebooks (or cut off the fringes if you do).

Quizzes
  • There may be quizzes, depending on the performance of the class.
