I will talk about some finite dimensional algebras (called degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebras) which generalize the group algebra of the symmetric group. These algebras are usually not semisimple even over the complex numbers, so that they have interesting representation theory which is similar in spirit -- but often more tractable than -- the modular representation theory of the symmetric group.
